ORDER of WORSHIP

[GATHERING]   [WE PREPARE TO WORSHIP]  [PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD]  [FELLOWSHIP GATHERING]

We welcome you today in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  We pray God's blessings upon you as you worship with us.  we hope you will experience something here that will make you feel welcome and wanted, because you are.  Please stay with us and share in Fellowship in the Family Life Center after the service.

VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME!

Any person who believes in Jesus Christ as Lord and is interested in Hope Mills UMC as your church family is invited to join with us as a member of the congregation. You may join by profession of faith, re-affirmation of faith, or transfer of your membership from another church.

Please contact the Pastor, Dr. Dennis Sheppard by phone at (910) 425-0108 or by email.

Our intent with this page is to generically discuss the Order of Worship used at Hope Mills UMC, as well as answer some of the recurring questions the Pastor has been asked over the years.  Hopefully, this will help all members of the congregation to better understand the Worship Service, leading to a more meaningful and fulfilling spiritual worship experience. Please note however, that this format will change for special services, such as Cantatas, Communion, and others.

Note - When we hold Communion, or the Lord's Supper, it is an OPEN COMMUNION.  This means Christ invites ALL - EVERYONE - to His table, regardless of your faith or church membership.  This church uses several formats for Communion (such as Intinction or Altar); the type used is made known to the congregation and instruction made as to how to receive Communion. Ushers will provide direction and assistance throughout the Service of Communion.

Nursery Care is provided at no charge for all children birth through age 5.  Children age 6 and up are asked to attend regular worship service, Children's Moment, and Children's Service.

The GATHERING

The Pastor or Lay Leader will make the Welcome announcement during which all visitors are provided a nametag, church flyer, and pen.

The Pastor or Lay Leader will highlight items of note in the bulletin and ask for any additional announcements to be made.

During this part the Praise Song will be heard.  This may be a choral, congregational, or special group music selection.

The congregation is asked to complete the pew pads as they are passed down the pew, providing an attendance record.

WE PREPARE to WORSHIP

The accompanists will play the Prelude as the Acolytes enter the Sanctuary and light the Altar Candles.  The Bible may also be presented at this time.  The Pastor or Lay Leader makes the Worship Greeting, as the Chancel Choir enters and the congregation sings the Hymn of Preparation (congregation stands).

The Pastor or Lay Leader will lead the congregation in an Act of Praise and personal Greetings as well as Passing of the Peace.

At this point, special items may be addressed such as Baptism, receiving of  New Members etc.  Sometimes this will happen after the sermon but before the benediction.

Next is Children's or Kid's Time.  A lay person will ask all children desiring to come forward to the altar area for a special lesson and prayer.  Children ages birth to age 10 are invited, parents may also accompany their child.

Children desiring to attend the Children's Church are then dismissed with an adult leader.  Only children 8 and under should attend this special service conducted for their level of understanding and enjoyment.

The Pastor or Lay Leader then leads the Sharing of Blessings and Concerns. Members of the congregation will voice any blessings. He will also ask for any expressions of  concern to be voiced by anyone in the congregation. Names may be added to the prayer list.

The Pastor or Lay Leader then leads the congregation in silent prayer, Intercessory Prayer, and ends with the Lord's Prayer which the entire congregation prays aloud along with the him.

The Hymn Prayer Response is then heard.  This may be a Chancel Choir only response, instrumental only, or a congregational response.

The congregation then offers thanks through an Offering of Tithes and Ourselves.  The Pastor or Lay Leader will make a brief statement of the need and purpose of offering as the Ushers and Acolytes move forward to the Altar area.  Offering plates are passed to the Acolytes; they will then pass the plates to the Ushers, who will move as needed down the aisles passing the plates among the seated congregation.  An accompanist will play or sing selected music during this time.

Once the Ushers have completed their duties, they will face the Altar as a que to  the Accompanist to begin the Doxology.

Congregation members stand when they hear the organ begin to play the Doxology, and the Ushers will move back to the Acolytes with the Offering Plates, hand them to the Acolytes, who will hand them to the Pastor, who will place them on the Altar or hold them aloft as the Doxology is sung and a Prayer of Dedication is offered by the Pastor  or Lay Leader.

The congregation then sings Gloria Patri together as part of the Prayer of Dedication.

Note:  At this time, the plates will be passed to a member of the Finance Committee, who is waiting just outside the Chancellery door.  This is simply an administrative act of our church, helping the Finance Committee to count the offering in a timely manner to ensure accuracy of amounts a posting of funds received to the proper accounts.

Next the Pastor or Lay Leader may lead the congregation is a recitation of one of the various Creeds from the Methodist Hymnal or a Special Music selection may be offered.  The most often used creed is The Apostle's Creed.

Notes:

* The Doxology is found on page 95 United Methodist Hymnal.

** Gloria Patri is found on page 70, United Methodist Hymnal.

*** The Apostle's Creed is found on page 881, United Methodist Hymnal.

PROCLAMATION of the WORD

The Pastor then reads the Scripture lesson for the day.

A selection of special music, or a congregational hymn may be sung.

The Pastor then offers the Sermon, or Communion is offered.

Upon completion of the Sermon or Communion, the congregation stands and sings the Hymn of Dedication, the Pastor offers the Prayer of Blessing, and the congregation sings the Benediction.  As the Benediction is sung, the Acolytes move to the Altar, snuff the candles, light their snuffers, and move down the main aisle and leave the Sanctuary.  The Pastor will follow them into the Narthex and will remain at the rear entrance door to greet worshippers as they depart the Sanctuary.

Upon completing the Benediction, the Organist will sound the Trinity Chimes (three chimes), and will begin playing the Postlude.  Once the Postlude begins, the congregation and Chancel Choir will begin to depart the Sanctuary.  The Worship Service is complete when the Postlude has ended.

FELLOWSHIP GATHERING

All members of the congregation and guests are invited to a short Fellowship immediately following each Worship Service.   This is most often in the Family Life Center (large building behind the main building) and is a time for all to relax and fellowship, getting to know one another better while enjoying refreshments provided by volunteers from the membership or one of the many groups of the church family.  Occasionally, one of the church groups (such as the Sunday School classes, Scouts, UMW, MYF or UMM) will host a full lunch meal for donations.
