[2001 NOTES] [2002 NOTES] Note: Pastor notes for 2006 may be found in the monthly church newsletter which is now available on the Newsletter page. Several years ago on New Year’s Day I read an article in the Newspaper about how few people really manage to keep their New Year’s resolutions. It set me to thinking. How do we really commit ourselves to doing new things, living out a new attitude, changing our lifestyles, and keeping the best of our resolutions? The British poet Robert Burns once said, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” Our best intentions, our most carefully considered plans, our promised commitments often fail to materialize in our lives. I have come to the conclusion in my own life that those things do not happen and will not happen unless I make a decision for them to. You see resolutions remain only goals on a sheet of paper until they become decisions that we make about our lives. Jesus once said, “no one who puts their hands to the plow and looks back is fit for the Kingdom of God.” Following Jesus is not a goal you set it is a decision you make. Jesus never talked about making resolutions because are just words, they carry no weight until they are transformed into decisions. I cannot find anywhere in the Gospels where Jesus ever said, “Make a resolution to follow me.” He just said, “Follow me.” That calls for a decision, a life changing decision of taking action, of actually doing something. You can talk about dieting; getting more exercise, or giving up cigarettes for example and it does not become a struggle until you decide to do it. This year it is my prayer that you will make decisions and not just resolutions about your faith life and your service to the church. I pray that you will decide to be more involved in the life of the church beyond Sunday worship. I pray that you will decide to grow spiritually by getting involved in Bible Study, Turning Point, Youth, and or Sunday school. I pray that you will participate in our Lay Witness Mission, in Revival, and in all of our Worship opportunities. This is a new year filled with new opportunities please don’t let them pass as unfulfilled resolutions. Make a decision today to give your time, talents, prayers, gifts, presence and service to God. It will be the best decision you will ever make. That wise old King Solomon said it best, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” |
